Book review: ‘Saleswalah’ – Sales explained in 11 stories

Good sales stories assist immensely in reducing the sale cycle. The book ‘Saleswalah’ presents inspiring sales stories of amazing street vendors.

The book analyses their sales approach using a simple and effective framework. The book will help you understand the key psychology of how real-world sales take place.

The process of sales is simple if you can weave stories that capture the attention of your buyers. The book analyses the Digital Identity of the ‘saleswalahs.’

In today’s world, each one of us is a salesperson. Saleswalah is the key to unlock your sales potential.

Subhadip Mazumdar, one of the prominent authors and winner of the Best Debut author award for his book ‘Orange Sky & Blue Sun’ at the Gurgaon literature festival 2019, has recently written ‘Saleswalah’. The book was digitally launched on 21st March 2020.

Business is the backbone of economic growth for any capitalist society. It is the engine that hauls the economy towards growth and development.

The most important factor in business is sales. If the sales are weak, organisations will struggle to survive and thrive.

In one sentence, sales can be defined as ‘transfer of emotions.’

We generally make sales a complex process but at the end of the day it’s just about communication, about telling a story it’s all about like you’re not telling someone what you have as a product instead of telling them a wonderful value proposition through a story so it could be simple.

Here is an example:

The Owner of a shoe company sent one of his salespeople to a town. The sales person held an early market survey at the unknown town and returned. When the owner asked him about the prospects of sales in the town, the sales person said “absolutely zero”. “There’s no market for us because nobody wears shoes,” he added helpfully.

The owner differed from the assessment saying: “If nobody is wearing shoes, it should be possible to sell 100% Right?”

“So, it is all about being positive; how you identify the opportunity. It is simple. Quite often we overlook that simplicity just as that’s shoe salesman” narrates Mr. Mazumdar in his book.

In today’s busy world, people will not give you an hour to pitch. You must be concise with your pitch. You will need to work for hours practicing the pitch, knowing the value associated with the product, its features for a perfect 15 minutes.

These fifteen minutes will make or break your deal. With the advent of technology and social media, Sales has become increasingly competitive and complex but having a positive perspective can make it all easy.

Six elements are important for a salesperson to be successful.

●   The art of storytelling, which is often overlooked and underrated.

●  Listening, which helps in understanding the client, their needs and requirements.

●  Emotional quotient.

●  Courtesy .

●  Patience and perseverance.

●  A salesperson must remain positive about there prospective customer and their own product.

Saleswalah’  is relevant for every Small-Scale Industry as well as start-ups. Often, people start a venture out of passion, emotion and vision but without having much of an understanding of sales. This book brings 11 real life stories answering all the sales-related questions for everyone to inspire and learn from.
