Organic farming: This’s how India traditionally grew its food

picture of the farming fields with plants

In her article on the prevailing trends in organic farming, Madhavapeddi Manaswini traces how traditionally organic farmers in India gradually embraced chemical fertilizers, pesticides and other chemical components that promised greater yield.

“We looked for shortcuts by adopting modern technology and harnessed populist scientific methods, which increased production and helped us feed more stomachs,” Manaswini writes in the article “This is how India traditionally grew food”. “But this came with brutal side effects with the use of pesticides, chemical fertilizers, artificial hormones, and synthetic inputs. Then the need to protect the deteriorating soil, livestock and our own health dawned on us.”

Besides mentioning various organic practices that keeps the plant and the produce chemical free, the article talks about how organic farming is gradually growing into a major trend with support of bodies like All India Organic Farmers Society (AIOFS), which grows a wide range of food products from brinjal to black grams.

For its cover story, this edition has visited a pair of passionate entrepreneurs who are sowing the seeds for an ecosystem around organic industry. An ecosystem is a cluster of companies that support each other and grow collectively. In this instance, ‘Neer International’ is also accelerating many companies and setting them up for a rapid growth.

“We will accelerate by finding additional sources of income for the companies,” Mr. Richard Felson, one of Neer’s two founders, said.

“If they are selling only one product, we will help them accelerate. We will study the businesses, explore the potential of multiple streams of income and help them adapt,”

Mr Felson explains in his interview to XpreZ Business Companion’s Anuradha Miraji.

Neer International has themselves been accelerated by GoGLOBAL Business School, Asia’s premier business accelerator and also the company that powers this newsletter. Neer is also the leader in GoGLOBAL’s health and wellness ecosystem.

Let’s learn it from a nature-loving honey seller, who followed his heart

speech given by Benedick Peter

Perhaps the sweetest part of this newsletter is the interview with software engineer-turned-organic farmer Benedik Peter, who talks about Organic mountain honey which he collects from tribals in the Eastern Ghatz and markets it as the purest in the market.

Benedik first spoke to us at the “Challenge the Challenge” programme, which GoGLOBAL conducts at the first week of each month. He spoke to us on a subsequent interview about his journey of doing engineering but feeling too empty to give up the lucrative job and pursuing organic farming, inspired by the organic scientist late Mr. G. Nammalwar. Benedik, who spells his name slightly differently because his mother’s love for Charles Dickens.

In this article, he talks to us about his experience of drinking honey in the forest, how he built his credibility among the tribals, and how pure mountain honey can be a medicine in itself.

We tried capturing the varying faces of the organic industry. Hope it gave you a comprehensive idea of the industry and how to be a successful start-up in this space.

Till we return with details on a different industry segment, it’s goodbye from us.
